History

The area now called Tennessee was settled around 10,000 BC. Inhabited by the Paleo Indians. The first Europeans were the Spanish conquistadors who explored the Mississippi River area in the 16th century. Folk hero Davy Crockett grew up in the eastern part of the state and was first a hunter, storyteller and chief of a militia. From 1833 to 1835 he represented Tennessee in the United States House of Representatives. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), the state sided with the Confederate States. The state was divided on this and Tennessee was the last state to switch to the Confederacy.

Geography

The eastern part of the state of Tennessee is mountainous and lies in the Appalachians. Here is the Clingmans Dome, the top of which is the highest point in the state at 2025m.
