New Jersey History

New Jersey is a state in the United States. The state borders the states of New York to the north and northeast, Delaware to the south and Pennsylvania to the west. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the east.

The state capital is Trenton, while Newark is the largest city. The state is named after the British Channel Island, Jersey. See directoryaah for museums in New Jersey.

TIMELINE:

1524 – Giovanni de Verrazano explores the coastline. He was the first European to penetrate New York Bay.

17th Century – New Jersey was originally inhabited by Native Americans with the Lenni-Lenape tribe as the dominant one when the Europeans arrived. The Lenape people farmed less (primarily corn) to support their mobile hunter-gatherer communities in the area around the Delaware River, the lower Hudson River, and western Long Island Sound. When the Dutch came into being, they claimed much of New Jersey, and the Dutch colony of New Holland consisted of parts of present-day New York (New Amsterdam) and New Jersey.. Although the European principle of owning land was not recognized by the Lenape tribe, the Dutch bought all the land they settled, and the first purchase was Peter Minuit’s purchase of Manhattan.

1674-1702 – During this period, New Jersey was ruled as two separate provinces.

1735 – MYTH: Pine Barrens has given birth to the legend of the Jersey Devil, who is said to have been born by a local woman, Mrs. Leeds, in an area called ” Leeds Point “. The devil was said to be her No. 13 child, and because of the unfortunate number, the child was cursed. Another story tells that the mother gave birth to a monster that attacked her and the nurses before it flew up and out of the chimney and disappeared into Pine Barrens. 1776-83 – Over 100 battles take place in New Jersey during the War of Independence. The Battle of Trenton took place on December 26, 1776, after George Washington had crossed the Delaware River.

1787 – New Jersey was the US ‘s third state on 18 December.

1790 – Trenton becomes the capital. The state became the first to sign the Bill of Rights.

1804 – New Jersey becomes the last northern state to abolish slavery and enact legislation that slowly phases out existing slavery. Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr dueled on the popular duel ground in Weehawken. Hamilton was badly wounded and the following day he died.

1838 – Dinosaur fossils are found in Haddonfield. Twenty years later, several bones from the now famous Hadrosaurus were found at the Hadrosaurus Foulkii Leidy Site, which is today a national historical landmark.

1861–1865 – Unlike the War of Independence, no fighting took place in New Jersey during the American Civil War, but a total of 88,000 volunteered under the banner of the Northern State Army to defeat the Southern States.

1879 – Thomas Edison invents the incandescent lamp.

1883 – Roselle becomes the first American city to be lit by electricity on January 19, built by Thomas Edison.

1885 – Grover Cleveland becomes the 22nd President of the United States from March 4 to March 4, 1889. However, he lost the presidential election to Benjamin Harrison, who won as a result of vote-rigging.

1893 – On March 4, Grover Cleveland was elected for the second time as President of the United States until March 4, 1897. He died in Princeton, in 1908, aged 71 years.

1913 – The governor of NJ, Woodrow Wilson was the US ‘s 28th president on March 4 and 4 March 1921st

1918 – On June 2, better known as ” Black Sunday “, the German submarine U-151 sank 6th American ships and damaged two others off the coast of New Jersey within a few hours.

1920s – New Jersey became a prosperous state, but was hit hard by the Depression. During both world wars, New Jersey was a center for the production of munitions, especially warships.

1927 – Holland The tunnel under the Hudson River opens.

1932 – Charles Lindbergh’s son is kidnapped from his home in East Amwell on March 1. On May 12, the body of the boy was found by a random passer-by walking in the woods near Mount Rose. Bruno Hauptmann was arrested and later executed for the murder in 1936.

1937 – One of the largest airships ever built, the German Hindenburg, crashed at Lakehurst Naval Air Station on May 6, when the flames began at the stern, and within 37 seconds the airship was overheated. Of the 97 people on board, 35 died (of these, 13 were passengers and 22 crew). One of the faithful on earth also died, bringing the final number to 36.

1938 – Orson Welles’ radio version of HG Wells ‘s ” War Of The Worlds ” caused mass panic because it was broadcast live on the radio. You can listen to the entire broadcast here. Read an interesting article about what actually caused the “panic” here.

1939-45 – The state produces battleships, anti-aircraft engines and more for the US Navy. Over 500,000 sign up for service.

1964 – A series of racial riots break out in Jersey City, 71 stores smashed and 46 people injured.

1967 – Racial unrest in Newark, 26 killed and $ 10 million in injuries. See lists of racial unrest in the world here.

1976 – A referendum is opened to build casinos in Atlantic City and two years later the first casino opens. Today there are 12 casinos in the city.

1979 – On July 27, The Amityville Horror premieres in the United States. The film was shot in Toms River, NJ. Indoor footage was shot at MGM Studios in California.

1984 – On July 29, 30 and 31, The Jackson played three sold-out shows at Giants Stadium during their Victory Tour.

1985 – From August to September, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played 6 sold-out concerts at Giants Stadium, on the final part of their Born in the USA Tour.

1986 – On June 15, the last of a total of 6 charity concerts under the name ” A Conspiracy of Hope ” was completed at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford. The purpose of these shows was not to raise money, but to raise awareness about human rights and Amnesty International’s work on its 25th anniversary. The concerts were headlined by U2, Sting and Bryan Adams, and were further attended by Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, Joan Baez and The Neville Brothers. The last three shows played The Police, which had been restored in honor of this case. The stage presentations were given by Bill Graham, Senator Bill Bradley, Robert De Niro, Christopher Reeve, Michael J. Fox, Darryl Hannah and Muhammad Ali. The show was filmed by MTV, and live radio.

1994 – Pink Floyd play their very last American concert on July 18 at the Giants Stadium on their Division Bell Tour, where they played The Dark Side of the Moon in full.

1998 – On February 20, Cop Land premiered in Denmark. Sylvester Stallone was praised for his transformation as the fat and half-dead sheriff in the film, which was shot in New Jersey.

1999 – The Sopranos is an American drama series created by David Chase. It premiered on pay-TV cable channel HBO in the United States on January 10, 1999, and ended its run of six seasons and 86 episodes on June 10, 2007. The show was filmed in and around New Jersey.

2001 – United Flight 93 leaves Newark on September 11, and 40 minutes later the plane is hijacked by terrorists. Some of the passengers decided to overpower the terrorists and get the plane back, but it failed and the plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. All 44 people on board (including the four hijackers and seven crew members) perished. On September 18, five letters were sent containing a brown powder. The letters were stamped in a post office in Trenton and were addressed to three news stations and two dailies. Four of these were addresses in New York City.

2003 – In July-August at Giants Stadium, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band broke their own record with 10 sold-out shows on the Rising Tour.

2006 – On July 29, Bon Jovi played eight sold-out shows in a row at Giants Stadium. This was also the last show on their Have a Nice Day Tour.

2007 – The ” New York ” part of ” Live Earth ” was held at Giants Stadium on July 7, and featured Kenna, KT Tunstall, Taking Back Sunday, Keith Urban, Ludacris, AFI, Fall Out Boy, Akon, John Mayer, Melissa Etheridge, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews Band, Kelly Clarkson, Kanye West, The Smashing Pumpkins, Roger Waters, Bon Joviand The Police on the program.

2012 – Superstorm Sandy hits Atlantic City on October 29, causing floods and power outages, but doing almost no damage to tourist areas.
