It is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and Arizona to the southwest. Colorado has an area of 104,093 square miles (269,837 km2). The geography of Colorado includes many mountain ranges and valleys that are divided by rivers and streams. The Continental Divide splits Colorado into two parts. The western part of Colorado is generally drier while eastern part receives more rainfall.
The highest point in Colorado is Mount Elbert at an elevation of 14,440 feet (4,401 m). This peak is located in Lake County in central Colorado near Leadville. The lowest point of elevation in Colorado is 3,317 feet (1,011 m) at Arikaree River near Grover on the Kansas border.
Colorado’s terrain consists mainly of rugged mountains and high plains along with some desert areas like Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve which has sand dunes up to 750 feet tall. There are also many canyons cut into these mountains such as Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park which has a depth of 2,700 feet (820 m). There are several large lakes such as Grand Lake which is located in Grand County and Blue Mesa Reservoir which is located in Gunnison County. There are also several mountain passes such as Monarch Pass between Salida and Gunnison or Vail Pass between Copper Mountain Resort and Dowd Junction near Vail Ski Resort.
In addition to its mountainous landscape there are also numerous plains across much of central northern colorado including South Park which covers over 1 million acres at an elevation around 9800 ft above sea level. These plains provide great opportunities for farming and ranching operations as well as recreational activities like camping and hiking due to their wide open spaces with few trees or other obstructions on them.

It originates from the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and flows through seven U.S. states before emptying into the Gulf of California. Along its course, it forms the natural boundaries between Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and California. It also creates several reservoirs including Lake Powell and Lake Mead which provide water for agriculture, industry, and recreation.
