Proper Care of Outdoor Clothing

Good, high-quality outdoor clothing is usually not exactly cheap in cost, so that the optimal care must not be neglected. So, a long life of the clothing can be guaranteed. No matter which was used in the manufacture, not only the appropriate cleaning, but also the perfect impregnation belongs to the care.

Is usually the proper care at a very low cost to accomplish, however, consumers should know that modern functional materials are often more sensitive to traditional detergents, as, for example, simple nylon or cotton. For this reason, there are for the different materials, such as down, fleece, soft – or Hardshell, also an extensive selection of appropriate detergents and care products.

Wash outdoor clothing

Outdoor clothing, which is used not only in extreme sports, but also when hiking or cycling, is exposed not only the varying weather conditions, but also the resulting weld. Just this residue can attack the coatings, elastic fibers, and tape seals over the course of time, where in addition the hydrophobic properties of the material can be reduced. Still, it may happen that welding residues diminish the important moisture from the body to the outside.

  • Hardshell

This material is characterized primarily due to his so-called vapor permeability and its water resistance. Body sweat can significantly reduce these properties or even completely destroy.

  • Softshell

This website is a functional material containing impurity of elastic fibers on top of that. Conventional detergents and toiletries can inflict significant damage to the clothing and thus greatly reduce the service life. This is mainly because even mild detergent with special additives are provided, for example, fabric softener and bleach. These additional substances attack the materials and limit their functions.

  • Cotton and cotton blended fabric

In, these tissues are very insensitive to the commercially available detergents. However, consumers should rely on Spezialwachmittel, when the clothing was provided when purchasing with special Imgrägniermitteln or the clothing should subsequently be impregnated.

How often should outdoor clothing are usually washed?

This question can be answered in principle not lump-sum because it is first and foremost on the actual use of the clothing. For a frequent usage applies as a rule of thumb that about every three months a cleaning should be done, what best suited specially designed detergent. These cleaning products are free of fabric softeners or other refined substances in any case, so that they can do anything the functional clothing.

Good detergent may wash out just the dirt and welding residues and not also the important impregnation. This means that the detergent on the existing impregnation should be coordinated, because a subsequent impregnation can never replace the first impregnation. Also the consumer on the environment should be offered, if he cleans his functional materials, which means that he should rely on sustainable products, now eighth as they by many manufacturers.

Even so-called universal detergents can be interesting, which are suitable for almost all possible textiles. However, clothing, which have a goose, form a special exception because this should in principle not even be washed. The advantages of Universalwachmittel are on hand, because on the one hand the consumer does not need a separate detergent for every garment of the function and on the other hand, the original impregnation are not damaged. In addition are the means able to neutralize seasoned detergent residue in the fabric, so that the entire effect can unfold in a subsequent impregnation.

In any case, consumers must know the appropriate water hardness and take into account, because’s the principle applies, the harder the water, the more detergent is needed. In case of doubt, there are special test strips or the opportunity to inquire at the local waterworks or the city administration for the determination of the degree of hardness.

May stain removers or solvents used for cleaning?

In principle should be avoided on such products, since they can access the processed membranes and coatings as they contain mostly very aggressive substances. This means that any oil or grease stains should remain in the tissues, if they cannot be removed with a mild detergent. Occasionally while trade provides stain removers, which are also suitable for functional materials, but the risk of massive damage is simply too great.

Impregnation after cleaning

Outdoor clothes washing is only the first step in the care, because then the impregnation is done, so then the water can repelled by the tissue and therefore also the important respiratory activity is maintained. It is still beneficial that dirt can being set after impregnation. Of course, the dealer offers an extensive selection of different means, so that the decision must be well-planned.

Usually good outdoor clothing is already equipped for sale with an excellent impregnation, which should be obtained as long as possible. For this reason, only gentle detergent should be used which are adapted to this impregnation. Some garments must be, dried in the tumble dryer and mostly at the lowest level. For this purpose, the care instructions on the label must be considered however. Done the laundry and drying at the same temperature, then the first impregnation is reactivated.

In the course of time, however original waterproofing will disappear, so retreatment is necessary, so that the clothing is equipped water-repellent again.

  • Hard and soft shell

For these materials, the dealer offers two different ways of impregnation, in the form of a spray or as a so-called Einwasch impregnation.

Best the spray is recommended for garments with a PU coating or a welding transporting lining. This applies also to breathable clothing, because the impregnation is applied only on the outside of the piece of linen. At the same time must be determined however, that spray impregnation are a little more complicated to use. This is because the piece of clothing when still wet must be laid out and sprayed. After extensively spread the stain with a damp cloth especially clean and hung up to dry. The drying process must be controlled, because it may happen that drops or strip form, which must be rubbed again.

Einwasch impregnation suitable for micro-porous membranes and enjoy an easy application. So, the clothing is washed first normal in the washing machine and then a further wash cycle with the impregnation is carried out. This method works very quickly and easily, but has a decisive disadvantage, because a possibly existing feed is also impregnated. How of the clothing is not affected while friends, but the feed can convey then a slightly soapy feel, which is not pleasant for everyone.

  • Cotton blended fabric

Also these fabrics can be treated with Einwasch impregnated as well as with an appropriate spray. Depending on the manufacturer, it may be necessary, that the garments before impregnation air-dried or heat treated must be, for example, with the help of the tumble dryer or an iron.

Nevertheless, the consumer should know, that cotton blended fabric while withstand a slight drizzle, strong but not wet.

The consumer can decide also for the so-called Greenland wax which is rubbed usually SOAP is as big as a piece and just on the fabric and then melted down with the hair dryer. This has the distinct advantage, the clothing can be selectively impregnated, for example, more on the pants legs.

Greenland wax is particularly environmentally friendly and above all completely non-toxic. Also, the hydrophobic effect is quite positive, because the order is determined by the user himself. However, must be identified, that the first impregnation of the manufacturer will be always better than a treatment. It is also detrimental that the breathing of the substance can be reduced, for example, to strong order. Also bright stripes can appear in the fabric folds, which are known by the experts as wax break.
